Geohot, the author of the iPhone 3GS jailbreak purplera1n, has created a new unlocking solution for the 3GS. According to him, it's the "true" unlocking solution. It's lightweight, conserves battery life, and is just as easy to get working as ultrasn0w. Read more...

Geohot, the author of the iPhone 3GS jailbreak purplera1n, has created a new software unlocking solution for the 3GS. According to him, it’s the “true” unlocking solution. Why? Because it only patches three files, and doesn’t have to run a process in the background that eats away battery life.

It’s not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn’t add a task to your baseband. It’s very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist. That’s it, no other files are installed.

This unlock does require you to have a legit, activated iPhone before you begin. According to Hotz, he’ll be finding a work around for this soon enough (“hacktivation”). The instructions on obtaining the unlock are fairly simple, and relatively the same as for obtaining ultrasn0w:

Be sure to have legit activated 3GS
Disable 3G if you don’t have it(like T-Mobile).
Add apt.geohot.com to Cydia
Install com.geohot.purplesn0w
Watch for success output in Cydia
Reboot, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone

For you reverse engineers, GeoHot posted more technical details on this unlock (including the source code) here. Good job, GeoHot! I wonder what other great things he’ll be bringing to the iWorld.
