Some people don’t want to wait to have their iPhone 3GS jailbroken until firmware 3.1; due to the iPhone Dev Team’s decision. Geohot, hacker and friend of the Dev Team, released his jailbreaking tool today which he calls purplera1n. Purplera1n is a full-blown jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS, including an installation of Cydia with it.

Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf.
To get started, just head on over to Purplera1n.com and download the version for your corresponding OS. Or, read the entire post by geohot at his blog.
In other news, the iPhone Dev Team is striving users to not update to the latest 3.1 firmware on the 3G or 3GS as always, because it could break the hole ultrasn0w uses for injection and prevent you from unlocking in the future. Today they posted a demo of ultrasn0w unlocking a 3GS 3.0 firmware (courtesy of planetbeing).
Our ultrasn0w program uses the at+xlog crash as an injection vector of our unlocking payload — and it does so on the 3GS in exactly the same way as on the 3G! But this injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband. So stay away from official 3.1 IPSWs until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband.
